The Zuger Chesslete has been organising the street carnival on Fat Thursday since 1978
In 1977, a group of wise carnival revellers founded the Zuger Chesslete association. On Fat Thursday 1978, the first morning parade and the first schoolchildren’s procession took place.
The aim remains the same to this day: to promote Zug’s carnival scene.
As a result, a Chesslete has been held every year since then. Over the years, the event has constantly evolved. However, the ‘fifth season’ has become firmly established in the calendar and is now an integral part of Zug’s cultural life.
Initially, the association was run and funded by the local business community, in particular the banks based in Zug and various interest groups representing Zug’s shopkeepers. Over the years, the structures have changed. To this day, however, all these changes have had a positive impact on the Zug Chesslete. In addition to the active Zug Guggen bands, public sector institutions such as Zug’s state schools, Werkhof Zug and ZVB (Zugerland Verkehrs Betriebe) are now also involved. As private organisations, alongside the long-standing main sponsors and many private patrons, the IG Bundesplatz and the Metalli shopping centre are also actively involved in the carnival celebrations.
In addition to the Tagwache, the Zuger Chesslete organises a schoolchildren’s parade, which is supported and promoted by the Zug City Schools.
Throughout the day, further events are organised, such as the Metallibühne and the Bundesplatzbühne, as well as the evening programme at Zug railway station. After the parade, young and old alike look forward to the confetti battle on Bundesplatz and the children’s carnival on Landsgemeindeplatz. The day is rounded off with the Chesselwy, which goes on until the early hours of the morning. Zug’s old town becomes a cacophonous hub. Over 20 Guggen bands give their all on various stages. But enough information for now. It’s time to join in. Put on your costume and shoes and head to the nearest Zug Chesslete.
